To streamline the administration of the Jeli District Council, several acts have been legislated and applied in the implementation of the Council activities which are:-

1. Act 171 – Local Government Act 1976
1. Local Government Act, 1976 (Act 171)
a)    To provide efficient and effective Town Services:

  • Solid Waste Management
  • Cleaning and Beautification of Area
  • Maintenance of Ditches & Drains
  • Construction & Maintenance of Roads
  • Maintenance of Public Buildings
  • Maintenance of Public Places
  • Protection & Control of Public Health
  • Maintenance of Burial Grounds

b)    To manage and control all financial allocations received:

  • Assessment Tax
  • Licence & Penalty payments
  • Launching Grant
  • Annual Grant using Equilibrium Method
  • Grant for development projects
  • Grant for road maintenance

c)    To carry out development projects at local level:

  • Housing
  • Industrial & commercial
  • Recreational facilities
  • Municipal infrastructure

2. Town and Country Planning Act (Act 172)
a)    To undertake the role as the Local Planning Authority for its Administration area:

  • To arrange, control and plan the development and reclamation of lands and building within its area.

3. Street, Drainage and Building Act 1974 (Act 133)

  • To approve building plans
  • To control in ensuring that earthworks carried out are in accordance with the stipulated requirements.
  • To ensure that the construction of a building is according to the approved plan.
  • To ensure that the usage of a building is as approved by the Local Authority.
  • To control the usage of flammable materials in the construction of a building.
  • To provide the infrastructure for a development.
  • To control the buildings which are at risk of danger.
  • To conduct scheduled inspections on buildings that have been issued the Certificate of Fitness for Occupation (CFO)
